The first day of spring is officially here. Rooftop gardens aren’t just a great way to celebrate spring, they’re also cool. Roof gardens and green roofs have proven to be one of the best defenses against urban heat-island effects and rising energy costs.
The popularity of green roofs has increased in the United States, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency. Major cities began imposing cool-roof requirements nearly 20 years ago, with Chicago being among the first. The Windy City has been joined by major metropolitan areas like Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City and Los Angeles, among others, according to Global Cool Cities Alliance.
